When Jeff Bezos founded Amazon, he was initially driven by the commercial potential of the internet—a typical example of external motivation. As the company expanded, Bezos’s motivation shifted to an inner drive. He became more focused on improving customer experience and technological innovation, rather than merely achieving business success. His vision was to use Amazon to transform the global retail industry and heavily invest in technological innovations such as cloud computing and artificial intelligence, paving the way for the future of global tech development.
Inner motivation is one of the most important driving forces in a child's growth. When children discover their own interests and work hard towards them, they experience a sense of accomplishment, which in turn pushes them to continue progressing. In contrast, if children are only motivated to meet their parents' expectations or to keep up with their peers, such motivation tends to be short-lived.
I love building with Lego. When I was five, my parents bought me a Lego set meant for kids aged 12. I didn’t need their encouragement or help—I completed it in two hours. This is an example of inner motivation, as I was genuinely interested in building Lego. Throughout the entire process, I enjoyed myself and didn’t feel tired at all. The broad learning resources and tools brought by the AI era can help children better discover and cultivate their interests, ultimately enabling them to realize their personal potential.
1. Encourage Independent Learning and Exploration
The development of AI technology provides us with more opportunities and resources for independent learning. We can use online platforms to learn about programming, science, art, and other subjects, rather than relying solely on school courses. Parents should encourage us to actively explore and learn about fields we are interested in, rather than depending on external motivation to complete our studies.
When children feel a sense of autonomy and control in their learning, they are often more proactive, which stimulates inner motivation. Independent learning also means that children have the opportunity to choose their own methods and timing for learning, rather than passively following the schedules set by schools or parents. This sense of autonomy helps foster a sense of responsibility, teaching us how to manage time and resources, thus enhancing inner motivation.
2. Create a Positive Learning Atmosphere
The learning environment is critical to fostering inner motivation. Parents can help maintain our enthusiasm and motivation for learning by creating a positive atmosphere. When we encounter difficulties in learning, parental encouragement and support provide inner strength. Such support makes us feel that we are not alone on our learning journey, thereby strengthening inner motivation.
3. Encourage Critical Thinking
Parents can encourage us to face and solve various problems, enhancing our inner motivation. For example, if we encounter a challenging problem during the learning process, parents can guide us to think about solutions on our own, rather than immediately providing the answers. This approach not only improves our problem-solving abilities but also makes us feel more in control of the learning process, which boosts our motivation.
Cultivating critical thinking is equally important. Parents can help us learn to analyze and evaluate problems, rather than passively accepting external viewpoints and information. For instance, when discussing the applications of AI technology, parents can guide us to think about its societal impact, not just the technical aspects. This helps us develop a habit of deep thinking and maintain a passion for exploring knowledge during the learning process.
4. Respecting Children’s Choices
Every child has different interests and talents. Parents should respect our choices and give us the freedom to explore our interests. Inner motivation often stems from a deep interest in a particular field, rather than external pressure or expectations. If parents can respect and support our interests, whether they are related to AI technology or not, we will feel more encouraged and motivated.
